Tolleson Union High School
Agua Fria High School
On a rainy night at Ronald Wood Stadium, the Agua Fria Owls fell 28-24 in their home opener to the Tolleson Wolverines, narrowly missing their chance to take back the River Rock .
Leading 24-21 late in the fourth quarter, the Owls gave up a 1-yard touchdown run on fourth and goal with 4:12 left in the final quarter. The Owlsâ comeback hopes were dashed when quarterback Jaylon Green was sacked on fourth and long.
Agua Fria was led by Green, who rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. Running back Chris Cofield added 43 yards and a touch on 7 carries and also caught 5 passes for 65 yards. Green finished 9-of-16 for 159 yards.
At halftime, a major thunderstorm swept through, delaying the game by about an hour. The teams and the fans emptied the stadium and most of the crowd huddled in the Old Gym to wait out the storm.
The wet field slowed the Agua Fria offense, which was unable to score the rest of the game.
The Owls got off to a fast start when the night began, scoring two touchdowns in the first two and a half minutes. On the second play from scrimmage, Green burst out for a 43-yard touchdown run. After a Darique Williams interception Chris Cofield punched it in for an 8-yard score.
After the Wolverines responded with a touchdown, Griffin Rhoelerâs 22-yard field goal extended the Owlsâ lead. Alexis Alay added a 21-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The Owls led at halftime 24-21.
The Owls are now 0-2 in the last two River Rock Rivalry games. The Owls return to action next week at home against Kellis High School on Sept. 11.
