Agua Fria takes down Salpointe Catholic to advance in the State Tournament

#2 seed Agua Fria Advances To Next Round of the state tournament by taking down #12 seed Salpointe Catholic with the score, 65-57.

Our very own Owls ended their regular season 25-2 while Lancers finished their season 20-8. Going into the state tournament, senior, Jordan McCants leads the Owls in points (15.3 ppg) and assists (2.8 apg).Senior, Darnell Cowart leads the Owls in rebounds per game with 8.5 rpg.

The Owls started off the game with a quick 2 points by Cowart in the low post and 2 points by Bryce Fowler to get the lead 4-0. The Owls were able to keep the Salpointe Lancers to zero points after 3 possessions in the first quarter. A few missed shots let the Lancers back into the game. Fowler continued to add points to the Owls’ score to keep them in the lead. The Owls ended the first quarter 20-15.

Olvera started off the Owls strong to continue the run with a three pointer, and 2 free throws giving Agua Fria a 5-0 run. The Owls missed a few opportunities to make the lead a little bigger but their defense made up for it. with 5:30 left in the second quarter McCants made a huge steal and converted it for 2 points to give the Owls some momentum. However, the Lancers brought themselves back into the game closing cutting the lead to one. Justice Cook came up with 2 points to bring the lead back.

A big block by Fowler kept the Lancers from adding 2 points to the board. The Lancers tied it up, 31-31, with a minute left in the first half. The first half ended with a 34-31 Lancers lead.

At the start of the third quarter, Cowart had 4 points, 2 rebounds, and an assist in the first 2 minutes of the third quarter. At 5:30 in the third the score was 37-37. McCants came up with 4 points to kickstart start their offense again. Along with Fowler’s 2 points and a blocked shot helped get the Owls back into the game. The Owls were able to bounce back and continue to put up points. the third quarter ended, with a Owls 49-46 lead.

The energy was at an all time high in the 4th quarter, with the crowd cheering for every point. The Lancers started the quarter on a 4-0 run. Cowart started off the offense in the 4th with a solid back to back shots for 4 points. Lancers responded with a 3 tieing up the game, 53-53. A huge assist by Cowart and a quick 2 points by Fowler put the Owls in the lead. Another assist from Cowart to Olvera, times 2, brought the lead to six. FOWLER WITH THE STEAL, THE BASKET, AND THE FOUL! Score at 1:30 was 61-55. Salpointe had to foul the Owls to stop the clock but it didn’t work. Fowler helped seal the deal with putting down both of his free throws. The Owls take home the second round win with the score, 65-57.

The Owls stars of tonight’s game was Jordan McCants with 12 points, Bryce Fowler with 12 points, and Cowart with 10 points. Great Game Owls!!

The Owls move to the third round and will take on #10 seed, Catalina foothills on Feb. 24th at 6pm at the Gila River Arena. Let’s Go Owls! #BeAnOwl
