On Friday, December 7th, and Saturday, December 8th our varsity wrestling team competed in our annual Big Red invitational wrestling tournament with great energy and determination to defend our home mats.
Friday’s match got the competition started off with a bang with a win against Washington 58-24, Estrella Foothills with a score of 51-30, Dysart with a score of 54-30, and Lee Williams with a score of 45-33. Our team was undefeated and ready for the challenge that the next day would bring.
More success came to our wrestling team the second day with a win against Buckeye with a score of 42-35 and Westview with a score of 52-30. With their undefeated record the team headed up to Lake Havasu for the Team Championship Competition and proudly brought home second place with a score of 29-48. Our team fought hard and left it all out on the mat.
Our team did not stop there, they had, “NINE student-athletes wrestle for a medal and SIX took home some hardware!” says Coach Higuera. Congrats to those six who won and to all nine students for putting in that extra effort to represent our school as well as themselves in the competition.
Our Owls wrestling team has put in the effort to better themselves on the mat as well as bettering themselves as a team. “We all support each other even though it is technically an individual sport,” says sophomore wrestler Nicole Pongos. There is a strong connection between the athletes that adds to the thrill of the competition as they cheer for each other from the sidelines.
Good luck to our Owls Wrestling team in their future endeavors.
