Boys Varsity Football · Varsity Football Gets “The Rock” back, advances to 2-0

The Agua Fria varsity football team had a long summer of hard practice. The weight room was made a priority and personal records were always being improved. They put a lot of hard work over the summer.  

When talking to quarterback Tre Lewis on the expectations for the season, he said, “ [We] definitely can have a playoff berth, and what I like to tell my boys is we’re 0-0 this week.”

To kick off the 2019-20 Varsity Football season the Agua Fria Owls went up against the Tolleson Wolverines. This game means a lot to both sides because it’s the River Rock Rivalry.

The game kicked off at 7 on Friday, August 30. In the first quarter, the Owls scored on a Jalen Williams Fuller run. There was a lot of back and forth in the 1st half but at the end of the half, the Agua Fria Owls were up 7-0.

To start the 3rd quarter, Tolleson came out hot. They scored on their first drive with a 43-yard touchdown pass. The game was all tied up. The rest of the 3rd quarter was a bit of a back and forth.

In the 4th quarter, Tre Lewis threw an interception, which led to Tolleson throwing a 47-yard pass to the goalline. It was 1st and goal and the Owls managed to get a sack. Now it was 2nd and goal and Alejandro Vasquez intercepted the ball in the endzone. 

The Owls marched down the field and took a timeout with 3.6 seconds on the clock. Camden Weeg lined up the field goal perfectly to win the game. The Owls brought “The River Rock” home defeating Tolleson 10-7. After the game the biggest take away from the game was and Lewis said, “Discipline was definitely a takeaway and we just have to find out who has heart and who doesn’t.”

Now the Owls were on to Camelback. The game kicked off at 7 on Friday, September 6. The Owls started this game fast and never took their foot off the gas beating Camelback by a score of 53-0. The player of this game has to be Jalen Williams Fuller with 112 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns.

The Owls defense played outstanding. They had a total of 4 takeaways. Prince Gee got an interception. Justin Aletor, Rodney Young Jr. and Keyonne Charleston had gotten fumble recoveries. 

The Owls take on Carl Hayden tonight and are hoping to improve to 3-0.
