Not long after the 18’-19’ Owls swim season had ended, Raven Roberts had taken her talents to the state level and performed at Skyline Aquatic Center. As of Nov. 8, Raven is the 9th best 50-meter free swimmer in the state of Arizona.
Raven Roberts is an Owl here at Agua Fria High School. Dedicated, motivated and passionate, she is no ordinary Owl. She is well known around the school for being more than an athlete and friend. “She is a super energetic athlete that can make any day at practice 10x better,” said junior Nadia Kostic, Varsity Lady Owl swimmer. “She always pushes herself to do better and is very dedicated.”
Roberts is an athlete and friend whos had great moments in and out of the pool. In the pool, Raven improved her 50-meter swim time from her previous time 24.69 seconds to 24.53 seconds. In many sports, such as swimming, the smallest improvements make a huge difference. With her improved time she “won her heat easily,” said Coach Secor.
Before improving, before jumping into the pool, Raven was determined to make a statement. She was laser-focused and to improve her time all season. It had all led up to this moment. Raven “didn’t want to work hard the whole season to just do bad at the biggest meet of the season,” she said.
With friends watching, Raven kept reminding herself to stay focused on her races and to not get distracted. “I like talking to people,” Raven said. “That sort of throws me off track with my mental race.”
Even with the odds against her, Raven Roberts pushed through.
Raven hopes that next year that she and her teammates could make it to state and make a relay team for one of the events. “The team will get better,” Raven said proudly. “We’ll improve our times and train hard in the upcoming season.”
She is a natural leader and great friend. “Not only that she is a great teammate that encourages others to always try their best,” Kostic said. “But she always brought me snacks and encouraged me to do my best each meet on our ride there.”
That concludes the 2019-2020 Varsity Swim Season. Look out for Raven Roberts and congratulate her when you do see her. Also, to mark your calendars for next season. Let’s go Owls!
