The junior varsity Owls football team traveled to Camelback High School to open up the 2019 season.
The Owls knew going into the game it was going to be a dogfight. Camelback high and the Owls opened up their freshmen seasons together the year before with the Owls edging the Spartans in a very close contest.
This year Camelback was fresh off a season opening win against North High School with the Spatans scoring a forty point shutout.
Agua Fria elected to defer to start the game and feeling a bit over confident attempted an onside kick. The play was close but Camelback was able to gain possession. One offensive play latter and the score was 6 – 0 Camelback.
Camelback failed to convert and kicked off the Owls. The Owls made a few big plays and scored to tie the game. The two point conversion was good and the Owls led 8 -6.
The Camelback offense struggled and punted to the Owls. The Owls once again drove the field and when the dust settled it was 18 -6 Agua Fria.
The Owl defense led by Jesus Casto and Omarrion Howard stalled the Camelback offense again forcing the Spartans to punt. However the Camelback defense made some adjustments and forced the Owls to punt. If making a bad decesion isn’t enough once the Owls decided to fake a punt and Camelback was having nothing to do with it. They stuffed the Owls attempt and soon there after they were celebrating in the endzone and the score was 16- 12 Agua Fria.
Agua Fria turned the ball over and Camelback reached the endzone again to take a 18 – 16 lead with 34 seconds left before the half. On the ensuing kickoff Jose Mulgado took the ball at the 20 and ran 80 yards to paydirt. The Owls took a 24 – 18 lead at half.
Defensive adjustments by the Owls and a couple of player moves allowed the Owls to turn the corner in the second half. This lead to a final score of Owls 38 Spartans 18.
The Camelback JV football team had quite a bit of talent, were very disciplined and were superbly coached. Best of luck to them for the rest of year.
